CFI Forum of Journalists in Paris

From 11 to 13 July 2023, Paris hosted Forum of Journalists organized by CFI, the French media development agency. The forum has been held regularly since 2011 and each time it brings together more than 300 professionals from all over the world.

With the support of MediaDoc France-Asie Centrale project a delegation from Central Asia including 20 journalists from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan was invited to the CFI Forum in Paris for the first time.

The main theme of this year's forum was fight against disinformation. Over the course of three days participants attended lectures, discussions and workshops as well as got to meet and communicate with colleagues from different parts of the world.

Training on Fact-checking / Reportage Shooting

From 18 to 23 August, two brief educational programs by French mentors were organized during the KazNU Summer School of Journalism at Issyk-Kul.

Pauline Chubar (France Médias Monde) conducted training on fact-checking, and Pierre Laurent (INA) conducted a practical intensive on reportage shooting with mobile devices. Both mentors worked with a group of students as well as a group of educators and professionals.

Documentary Filmmaking Workshop

From 4 September to 14 October, a workshop on documentary filmmaking from the French film school Ateliers Varan in partnership with Tashkent Film School was held in Tashkent. Eight aspiring filmmakers from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan were selected to participate. During the workshop program for 6 weeks the students learned fundamental aspects of filmmaking, and by the end of the workshop each student had produced his/her own short documentary film. The mentors of the workshop were filmmaker and Ateliers Varan trainer David Tretiakoff, filmmaker and co-founder of Tashkent Film School Michael Borodin and documentary filmmaker and photographer Umida Akhmedova.

Documentary Project Development Workshop

At the end of 2023, a series of workshops on developing a dossier for a documentary film project, organized by the educational organization Docmonde, took place in Bishkek, Tashkent, Dushanbe and Almaty. For 2 weeks, groups of participants (4-7 people) worked on the projects of their upcoming documentaries. The mentors were directors and Docmonde trainers Samuel Aubin, Christophe Postic, Vladimir Léon, Vincent Sorrel and Nikolai Bem.

Editing Workshop

Dates: 4-15 December 2023

Venue: Tashkent, Uzbekistan

From 4 to 15 December, a workshop on documentary film editing was held in Tashkent, organized by the French film school Ateliers Varan with the support of the State Institute of Arts and Culture of Uzbekistan. The educational program was attended by 8 students of the Institute majoring in directing, animation and camerawork. During 2 weeks they were immersed in learning the basics of editing in practice under the mentorship of filmmaker and Ateliers Varan trainer David Tretiakoff.

Training on Fact-checking and Fight Against Disinformation for Students

At the end of February 2024, a one-week training program on factchecking and combating disinformation was held for students from Central Asian countries. This educational program was organized by the Superior School of Journalism and took place in Lille from 26 February to 1 March. 12 students from four Central Asian countries were selected to participate, some of whom attended the training remotely.

CFI Regional Forum of Journalists in Tashkent

Canal France International (CFI), the French media development agency, organized for the first time a regional forum in Tashkent that brought together more than 150 journalists from France, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Over the course of three days, roundtable sessions and workshops addressed the main issues facing contemporary journalism in Central Asia. Such topics as methods of combating disinformation, journalistic ethics, media education, contemporary challenges of journalism and cooperation between the French and Central Asian media were on the agenda.

Eurasiadoc Documentary Film Forum

Venue: Almaty, Kazakhstan

Eurasiadoc Documentary Film Forum, organized by Docmonde with the support of Almaty Creative and CAFG, took place from 2 to 7 June as part of the MediaDoc France-Asie Centrale regional project.

Industry Day took place on 5 June, during which invited organizations, foundations and festivals associated with documentary film were presented. Among them CNC, Arte, East Doc, IDFA, KazakhCinema and others. The next two days were dedicated to pitching documentary projects developed by Docmonde workshops' participants in 2023.

The public program of the forum included a three-day workshop on auteur documentary from director David Yon, as well as a series of film screenings.
